Hi all. I've just realized I haven't properly introduced myself. My bad! My name is Helen. I was born in Hong Kong, and later moved to Canada; I lived there for almost 10 years. After graduating from university, I moved back to Hong Kong. I became an English teacher at a local secondary school. I can tell you honestly that I hated reading when I was young, whether in Chinese or English. However, it was a different story when I was an undergrad. I started reading non-stop. I fell in love with Paulo Coelho's inspirational novels. He is a Brazilian author and his novels are spiritual and inspiring. I love the way he analyzes life. I have bought every book he wrote and now I'm waiting for his latest one, Manuscript Found in Accra, to be translated in English.

Hi there, how are you doing? I must admit that I completely do not realize there is such a zone like this in eyny, specializing in English learning, until I browse through by accident. I think this activity is a very sound idea by encouraging various folks to discuss and participate using English. There is no other way to improve English, other than practice, practice, and more practice!

Just in case you wonder, English is not my mother tongue. I am a Malaysian Chinese, where Mandarin (Chinese Language) is my mother tougue, and Malay Language is my national language. Since young each Malaysian has to learn at least 2 or more languages, where Malay Language is a compulsory subject. Although there are quite a number of Malaysian Chinese do not speak or read Mandarin, but at very least they can understand and speak some dialects, such Cantonese, Hokkian, Hakka, Teochiew, etc.

As for me, I spoke Mandarin at home since young, and I understood a little bit of Hakka as my grandparents spoke in Hakka ccasionally. However I did not have a very good command of English until I finished my secondary school, mostly due to lack of practice, especially in term of spoken English. I could read and write decently, but I could barely say a complete sentence fluently. Not until I entered University, where English became a medium for learning. Friends and classmates spoke English to each other. Lecturers taught and discussed in English. All the examinations were conducted in English as well. After a couple of years of regular use of English in my daily lives, I was getting used to speaking much better English than before.

After graduated, I was hired by a multi-national company based in Silicon Valley, U.S. It is one of the biggest company in the field of semi-conductor. The good thing about working in a well-known and well-established multi-national company is that there are a lot of freedoms, and you get to deal with people from all over the world, be it from all corners of the U.S, Europe, Middle East, and Asia. English becomes part and parcel of my daily working life. Each year I get to travel overseas to the US and occasionally to the Europe, for meetings and project or work-related discussions. Sometimes I get to relocate to the US for half a year or one year.


Working life is tough, lots of competitions, politics, technical challenges, and with bad economic climate, financial pressure is looming much worse than ever. Speaking about work, I think I better call it a day here, get a shower, and get back to my works that are pilling up!

  Sorry for causing a little confusion.  I have never gone abroad, and I watch MLB games via TV and computer network here in Taiwan.  I should rewrite my sentence again.  "In addition, watching a baseball game in America does cost a lot."  Am I right this time?

I know this isn't a pet forum, but I can't resist sharing something about my 1 1/2-year-old striped tabby kitten ;) Her name is Brownie and recently she has started to imitate  chirping birds; it's hilarious!! Every morning, she will lean on the windowsill and gaze through the window to look for birds, and when she hears birds chirping, she will do the same, like chattering, trying to lure the birds lol. She's adorable when she does that!! Anybody here owns a pet?

Forgive me if I'm too bold and audacious, but since our forum master, Iccschuey, is back, would Iccschuey kindly initiate a topic for us to discuss? Perhaps something not too political or religious?? I've already tried putting up current events previously but to no avail. ;(

Really? Are you for real? It's rather rare to get typhoons during the winter months. Well, maybe it's different in Taiwan... I live in Hong Kong and we get cold, dry monsoons in winter. And It's gonna get pretty cold and dry over the weekends. So ladies, put on your moisturizer!!! I love using vitamin E skin care products since they are very moisturizing in winter ...

Thanks God it's Friday... I can finally take a rest... I came home today after work and I went straight to bad for like about 4 hours... Still feel a bit of headache might be due to stress. Any how it's gonna be a long weekend because of the Martin Luther King's day.... Gonna hang out with friend tomorrow in Flushing and see what we gonna do about it. Might just go shop around and eat.

I'll take day off on the following Wednesday for my person day and I still have 12 days left that I can use for my personal days.  I haven't decide what I'm gonna do  on Wednesday yet. Any how I'm just gonna go chill for now.

I have to say that New York is a very interesting place because it has people came from all over the world. Because of that, you can see all different kind of culture and you also learn to respect them. Also due to this reason that you can actually eat food from all over the world and only place like New York can actually do it. I love this place  and this is my home. I was born in New York, but I went to Taiwan when I was a kid. I came back to New York 12 years ago and never leave this place ever since.
